Research Scope

An overview of research focus

We have a 22-bedded Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit within our Neonatal Unit. In the past our research focus has been in diagnostic markers of neonatal sepsis and necrotizing enterocolitis and early life exposures and long-term child health. Recently we have been further developing research projects within the field of neonatal gastrointestinal microbiome and big data research.

News of the team

Donations

  • Neonatal Research Fund

Donations to the neonatal research fund allow us to initiate novel projects within our research fields of focus to generate data that are crucial for successful competitive external research funding.

  • Carol Chu Memorial Fund

This fund was setup by Mr Brian Siu in memory of his wife, Carol Chu, who wished to establish a fund within our department to enable meaningful projects that could improve the lives of children. This fund has allowed us to join the Australian and New Zealand Neonatal Network, which allows our unit to benchmark our neonatal outcomes against the Network. This information allows us to focus our quality improvement initiatives to most effectively improve clinical service and neonatal outcomes.

Opportunities to research students

  • Collaborations with Australian and New Zealand Neonatal Network

  • Collaborations with the Hospital Authority Data Collaboration Laboratory

  • Neonatal surgical collaborations with the Hong Kong Children’s Hospital
